Christian Business Leaders: The Choice is Yours

Christian Marketing, Christian Business LeadersFirst, it was the massive bankruptcy of the Family Christian Store in 2015.  And now, Send the Light Distribution is closing their doors for good – though we all know it’s not for the good.  Among many other Christian products, STL used to ship over 25,000 Bibles a day.

“The multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him.”

When it comes to the Christian Business Leaders of today, these words from Shakespeare have never echoed more loudly…or more clearly.  The villainous nature of all retail industries has changed drastically over the past decade, creating a call-to-action from any and everyone in business today. However, the only question that remains unanswered is whether or not Christian retailers will choose to answer that call.  The good news?  There is already a scripted and simple solution to solving this downward spiral of Christian book stores and retailers.

So…what is the call-to-action?

If you were to research articles about STL’s heartbreaking announcement this past June, and compare them to articles about the FCS bankruptcy last year, you will discover that everyone involved is speaking the same language; they are all attributing this downfall to one common factor.

Beginning with an article written on MiBiz.com, (Nick Manes, 2015), when asked about the restructuring of the retail giant, Family Christian CEO Chuck Bengochea was quoted, saying that:

“We’re never going to compete with Amazon – that’s a losing proposition.  But I don’t want (customers) to have to wait a week and a half just because (they’ve) ordered a Christian Product.”

Bengochea was referring to the new hybrid e-commerce sales-and-distribution model.  And, “No,” this isn’t a typo.  I said “New” e-commerce model – though the article was written in 2015.  I thought it no longer possible for the terms “New” and “e-(anything)” to appear together in any sentence?

Nevertheless, as we look to a recent article published by Christianity Today Shellnutt, Kate “Shutting Down: America’s Largest Distributor of Christian Products.” Christianity Today (2016)www.christianitytoday.com/…/shutting-down-distributor-christian-pro…  pertaining to the shutdown of Send the Light Distribution, we find Christian Literary Agent, Steve Laube being quoted as saying, “If their demise had been six months ago, I would have made the correlation (to the FCS bankruptcy). But today it is merely a reflection of the shift in retail buying patterns.”

Mr. Laube continued:

“Ironically, it doesn’t mean books aren’t selling, when in fact they are.  Instead it only means they are being purchased in a different place.”

Now we’re getting the picture…

From the restructuring of FCS, to the recent fall of STL, what once appeared to us in a mirror dimly is now a very vivid picture that has finally come into complete focus; a portrait painted so clearly that, by every stroke of the brush across the canvas, it mightily declares that there is no longer an excuse to be had or made by the Christian markets; an image that doth force its authority upon every Christian Business Leader, crying out these three most profound words………. You Must Choose!

Embracing the Necessary Evil?

Old Christian Business Practices

Putting Off the Old

As with everything that has ever existed in this world, the one thing that will always and forever stay the same, is the fact that everything will always and forever be changing.

When it comes to the world of business, everything has now shifted from the storefront to the internet, where you can find 7 out of 10 Americans on most days.

In an article released July, 2015 Mintel’s Online Shopping US 2015 Report, Mintel issued these findings:

  • 69% of US online adults shop online at least monthly, with 33% shopping online every week in 2015, up from 24% in 2014.
  • 48% of online shoppers admit to increasing their purchases in order to hit the “free shipping” minimum.
  • Consumers are averaging $114 per online order, driving online retail sales from 264.2 billion in 2013 to $304.9 billion in 2014.

Your initial response might be, “Well I already have a website, and I can’t tell that it makes any difference.”  Don’t worry, I’ll educate you on that in just a bit.

Nevertheless, the data continue to pile up and increase as time moves on.  And those who insist upon sticking to the old ways of retail, will soon fall by the wayside.

Though we Christians have for so long tried to stay away from online activity, whether it be .com’s or social media, the evidence has been made clear that in order to sustain and thrive in the cut-throat economy in which we reside, embracing this necessary evil is a must.

The Christian Entre-Producer

As I began this journey of becoming an Expert Christian Copywriter, I continued to hear how the Christian Markets were light-years behind when it comes to the retail industry.  And from my endless research, and the happenings in our industry over the past year, it is evident they were correct in their statements.

Now, as I began my business research, I sifted through tons of Christian websites.  And what I immediately gathered with almost every site that I audited was this sense of:  “My business is online, but I don’t know what to do next.”
